More true crime/mystery shows like Criminal or Sword and Scale?

True crime and mystery podcasts tend to intertwine, so my recommendations for a listener seeking more shows like Criminal and Sword and Scale are somewhat of a hybrid of these genres. And with the sheer number of crime podcasts growing each day, I decided to find some shows that appear to be lesser known but are truly beloved by their audiences.

For true crime with a mysterious angle, try:

True Crime Historian— it’s exactly as it sounds, true crimes in history.

Once Upon A Crime — thought provoking mysteries one chapter at a time.

Thin Air — missing persons cases from around the world

In Sight — a different look at crime and mysteries.

Bay Area Mystery Club — the mysterious, murderous, and macabre history of the Bay Area.

They Walk Among Us — sinister and surreal true crime from the UK.

And since I can’t think “mystery” without sharing two solidly excellent shows that take a humans solving human mysteries bent: Reveal (here’s the link to the show in RadioPublic) is an excellent investigative journalism podcast and Found digs into the origins of lost objects. They’re not true crime, but their storytelling approach is akin to that of Criminal.

All the links in this article will automatically open in the RadioPublic app, so download the app for iOS or Android to begin listening. And if you’re seeking more personal recommendations, send the Podcast Librarian a note and I’ll help you find something you might enjoy.
